Essay. In translation by Claudia Sinnig
This essay was written a couple of years ago, before the Ukraine crisis, and received positive critical acclaim at home. I believe that in the present political situation it would be interesting for an European reader too. It is about tense, ambivalent, love-hate relationships of Lithuanians and other Central-Eastern European people with Russians. It is also an insider exploration of Russian set of mind through my childhood experiences in a bilingual neighborhood in Vilnius, through Russian literature and arts, and through my travels in Russia. My model and example for this text were magnificent large essays by Joseph Brodsky.
